Isn't it funny how we pull inspiration from so many different things regarding our business?

I've just sat and watched Only Fools and Horses. Yes, the classic British sitcom. The one with all the one-liners, down to earth comedy, and feel good tv programme.

Del and Rodney, the unlikely twosome, took on the sales and marketing game with a briefcase and a three-wheeled van. They are always looking for the next thing to sell.

Where am I going with this? As business owners, we are always looking for the next thing to sell, create or promote. But what if, like Del and Rodney. After so much trying and searching to find the next new craze or trend, they actually had their biggest asset sat in a garage for 16 years!

16 years they were sat on their most significant asset and never even realised. What if we as business owners stop chasing the new and look at what we already have? Do some searching of our own, but without looking any further than our existing services and products. Who knows, a little polish up, and we may already have the answer to our business growth right under our noses.

Take your most profitable service/sale, dust it down, polish it up, and let everyone know about it! The answers we regularly go looking for may already be in our/your offering or is a side-line of an existing service.

A cake maker, for example, throws offcuts away. STOP! Sell them as trash trays, box them up and sell them as an add on.

I'm not saying you / we will be millionaires this time next year but what I am saying is let's not act like a plonker. Let's look at ourselves first.

Who knows, the three-wheeler could soon become a rolls...
